About

C. Archibald is a pioneering researcher in robotics, whose work has fundamentally advanced the fields of real-time tracking, sensor-based manipulation, and skills-oriented robot programming. His most impactful contribution is the development of a system for real-time tracking in five degrees of freedom using wrist-mounted laser range finders (17 citations), where he demonstrated how two orthogonal laser sensors on a PUMA robot could enable an end-effector to maintain a constant position relative to moving objects. This work, along with his research on tracking and grasping moving objects using reflex behaviour (9 citations), established foundational methods for robots to operate in unstructured, dynamic environments. Archibald also made significant theoretical contributions with his computational model for skills-oriented robot programming (SKORP), which proposed a formal template for creating sensor-based robot operations that could be easily used by production engineers. His early work on pose determination of a satellite grapple fixture (3 citations) showed the practical application of his sensing techniques for space robotics. With a career spanning from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, Archibald’s research at the National Research Council of Canada has been instrumental in bridging the gap between advanced sensing and practical robotic control, influencing subsequent generations of roboticists working on real-time, sensor-driven automation.
