Brian P. Whalen is a leading figure in the development of autonomous on-orbit satellite servicing and space robotics. His foundational work on the **Spacecraft for the Universal Modification of Orbits (SUMO)** program, a DARPA-sponsored risk reduction initiative executed at the Naval Research Laboratory, laid the critical groundwork for autonomous rendezvous and docking with non-cooperative spacecraft.
