About
Arun Ramakrishnan is a leading researcher in neural engineering and rehabilitation robotics, with a primary focus on developing brain–machine interfaces (BMIs) for restoring motor function after spinal cord injury. His pioneering work investigates how neural activity in the hindlimb and trunk regions of the sensorimotor cortex encodes movement-related information, offering critical insights for designing BMIs that can control assistive devices for locomotion. In his highly cited 2009 study (41 citations), Ramakrishnan demonstrated that multiple types of movement information are available from these cortical areas, expanding BMI applications beyond traditional forearm control. He also developed innovative robotic tools for rehabilitation, such as applying elastic force fields to the pelvis of spinal-transected rats (2006, 17 citations), enabling detailed assessment and targeted therapy. This work bridges neural decoding with robotic rehabilitation, providing a foundation for closed-loop neuroprosthetic systems.
