About
Arumugam Manthiram is a world-renowned pioneer in the field of electrochemical energy storage, with a career dedicated to advancing battery technologies for a sustainable future. His primary research areas encompass lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and next-generation energy storage systems, with a particular focus on developing high-energy, low-cost, and safe cathode materials. Manthiram’s most transformative contribution is the discovery and development of lithium-rich layered oxide cathodes, which have significantly increased the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. He also pioneered the use of solid-state electrolytes and advanced understanding of polysulfide shuttling in lithium-sulfur batteries. With over 1,200 publications and an h-index exceeding 150, his work has garnered more than 100,000 citations, reflecting profound global impact. Notably, his 2022 paper on "Next‐Generation Energy Harvesting and Storage Technologies for Robots Across All Scales" explores self-powered, untethered robotic systems, demonstrating his visionary approach to integrating energy storage with autonomous machines. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, Manthiram’s research continues to shape the future of portable electronics, electric vehicles, and grid-scale energy storage.
