About

Ankush Roy’s research lies at the intersection of computer vision, robotics, and assistive technology, with a focus on enabling machines to perceive and interact with the physical world. His most influential work, “Tracking benchmark and evaluation for manipulation tasks” (2015, 32 citations), introduced a public dataset specifically designed to evaluate visual trackers for human and robot manipulation. This contribution addressed the critical need for high-accuracy, high-degree-of-freedom tracking in robotic tasks, providing a standardized framework that has become a resource for researchers developing dexterous manipulation systems. Earlier, Roy explored agricultural robotics in “Statistical Video Tracking of Pomegranate Fruits” (2011, 7 citations), tackling the challenge of fruit detection in dense foliage—a key step toward automated harvesting. Demonstrating versatility, he also contributed to biomedical engineering with “Design, Analysis & Prototyping of a Semi-Automated Staircase-Climbing Rehabilitation Robot” (2018, 3 citations), developing SKALA, a novel robot to assist individuals with physical disabilities in navigating stairs. This work highlights his commitment to creating practical, real-world solutions. Through these diverse projects, Roy has shown a consistent ability to identify pressing problems in visual tracking and robotics, laying groundwork for more capable and accessible autonomous systems.
