About
Andrea Nacci is a leading figure in otolaryngology and sleep surgery, whose work has fundamentally reshaped the surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). Her primary research focuses on the application of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) to address upper airway obstruction, with a particular emphasis on the tongue base. In her landmark 2011 study, which has garnered over 150 citations, Nacci provided the first comprehensive description of tongue base anatomy from a robotic perspective, using cadaveric dissections to establish a safe surgical roadmap. This work directly demonstrated the clinical feasibility of TORS for tongue base hypertrophy in OSAHS patients, offering a minimally invasive alternative to traditional, more morbid procedures. By bridging the gap between anatomical understanding and robotic technique, Nacci’s contributions have not only advanced surgical precision but also improved patient outcomes and recovery. Her research remains a cornerstone for surgeons worldwide, cementing her reputation as a pioneer in the integration of robotic technology into sleep surgery.
