An omnidirectional antenna, in the context of robotics and AI, refers broadly to sensing systems capable of perceiving their environment uniformly in all directions simultaneously, without mechanical reorientation. While the term originates in radio communications describing antennas with 360-degree signal coverage, robotics literature applies this concept most prominently to omnidirectional cameras and vision systems, which use catadioptric optics—combining mirrors and lenses—or wide-angle hyperboloidal/conic mirrors to capture a full panoramic field of view in a single image. These sensors appear extensively in mobile robot navigation, localization, mapping, person tracking, formation control, and visual servoing tasks. Because omnidirectional sensing eliminates blind spots and removes the need to rotate sensors toward targets, robots can react more quickly to stimuli approaching from any direction, complementing other modalities like laser range finders. The concept extends further to omnidirectional microphone arrays for sound source localization and omnidirectional wheeled platforms enabling unconstrained planar motion. Together, these omnidirectional sensing and actuation technologies are fundamental to building robots that operate robustly and autonomously in complex, unstructured real-world environments.
