About
Zhihong Qiao is a pioneering aerospace engineer whose research focuses on on-orbit servicing, space robotics, and autonomous planetary exploration systems. As a key contributor to China’s space station program, Qiao led the development of the on-orbit maintenance and manipulation workbench (MMW), a critical facility enabling astronauts to perform repairs, experiments, and assembly tasks in microgravity. This work, published in 2023 and garnering 6 citations, represents a foundational step toward sustainable long-term human presence in space. Qiao has also advanced extraterrestrial robotics through innovative path planning for lunar subsurface burrowing robots. By developing an improved Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm, Qiao addressed the formidable challenge of autonomous navigation in three-dimensional underground lunar environments—a low-cost, high-efficiency solution for future subsurface exploration missions.
