About

Yuyi Lin is a pioneer in the emerging field of 4D printing, where 3D-printed structures transform over time in response to external stimuli. Her research centers on smart, stimuli-responsive polymers and programmable hydrogels, with a particular focus on self-morphing materials that mimic biological systems. In her highly cited 2017 work, “4D printing of a self-morphing polymer driven by a swellable guest medium” (97 citations), Lin introduced a novel approach to fabricating dynamic structures by embedding a swellable guest medium within a printed polymer matrix. This breakthrough enabled precise, programmable shape changes—such as bending, twisting, and folding—without external mechanical forces. Her follow-up study, “Bioinspired Programmable Polymer Gel Controlled by Swellable Guest Medium” (43 citations), further advanced the concept by demonstrating origami and kirigami-like transformations in soft gels. Together, these contributions have laid critical groundwork for applications in soft robotics, flexible electronics, and tissue engineering. Lin’s work is distinguished by its elegant integration of materials chemistry and additive manufacturing, offering a scalable platform for creating adaptive, autonomous devices. Her research continues to inspire new directions in 4D printing and responsive materials.
