About
Yaroslav Sagan is a leading figure in astroparticle physics, with a primary focus on the development and application of novel detection techniques for very-high-energy gamma rays and cosmic rays. His major contributions center on the TAIGA-HiSCORE experiment, where he pioneered the use of wide-angle, non-imaging Cherenkov detectors to observe fast-moving, man-made point sources in space. In a landmark 2017 study (7 citations), Sagan’s team achieved the first ground-based detection of the CATS-LIDAR laser pulses aboard the International Space Station, using the TAIGA-HiSCORE facility and the MASTER-Tunka robotic telescope. This work demonstrated HiSCORE’s unique capability to detect unscattered laser light from the ISS at kilometer-scale distances from the beam’s ground spot, validating the instrument’s sensitivity for calibrating large-scale cosmic-ray arrays.
