About
Y. Yamashita is a leading innovator in the field of advanced image sensor technology, with a primary focus on Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems. Their major contribution lies in the development of high-performance, 3D-stacked single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) based direct time-of-flight (DTOF) image sensors. Yamashita’s seminal 2018 work, which has garnered 89 citations, introduced a groundbreaking 256×256 pixel sensor fabricated in a 45/65nm process. This sensor achieved significant interference suppression—up to 18.6dB—through optical polar modulation, a critical advancement for the reliability of LiDAR in demanding environments. This technology is pivotal for applications ranging from autonomous vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) to augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) and drone-based surveillance. By addressing the common challenge of interference from other LiDAR sources, Yamashita’s work has directly enhanced the accuracy and robustness of depth sensing, making it a cornerstone for next-generation spatial awareness in robotics, navigation, and consumer electronics.
