About
Xingwei He is a specialist in satellite-based aerosol remote sensing, with a research focus on retrieving aerosol optical depth (AOD) over land surfaces using multi-sensor and synergetic algorithms. His work addresses one of the most technically challenging problems in atmospheric science — accurately measuring aerosol properties over complex terrestrial environments where surface reflectance complicates satellite retrievals. He is perhaps best known for developing and contributing to the Synergetic Retrieval of Aerosol Properties (SRAP) algorithm, which underpins the widely cited China Collection 2.0 AOD dataset (2014, 68 citations) — a landmark contribution providing long-term, high-quality aerosol records across China. His innovative use of time series techniques with MSG/SEVIRI geostationary data (42 citations) and synergetic combinations of HJ-1 CCD and MODIS observations (40 citations) demonstrated new pathways for improving spatial resolution and retrieval accuracy over urban landscapes. He has also applied his expertise to pressing environmental challenges, including dust storm monitoring in Xinjiang (33 citations) and tracking agricultural biomass burning events across Central and East China. With over 250 cumulative citations spanning land aerosol retrieval, haze monitoring, and multi-satellite data merging, He's body of work has meaningfully advanced China's capacity for atmospheric pollution monitoring from space.
