About
Tadao Nagatsuma is a pioneering figure in terahertz (THz) photonics and electronics, renowned for pushing the boundaries of high-frequency electromagnetic wave technology. His research centers on the development of compact, high-performance THz sources, detectors, and systems for sensing, imaging, and communications. A standout contribution is his work on terahertz coherent receivers using a single resonant tunnelling diode (RTD), which offers a simple yet sensitive solution for advanced THz applications—a paper that has garnered 82 citations since 2019. Nagatsuma also leads innovation in photonic radar systems, as demonstrated by his 2021 study on a 600-GHz-band frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar, achieving a remarkable range resolution of ~0.8 mm over a 450–750 GHz sweep. This work enables flexible inspection distances for non-destructive testing and security screening. With a career spanning decades, Nagatsuma has been instrumental in bridging photonics and electronics, earning recognition for his contributions to ultra-broadband wireless communications and terahertz instrumentation. His research continues to inspire new generations of engineers exploring the terahertz gap.
