About

Subin Kim is a rising innovator in the field of smart materials, with a primary focus on liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and stimuli-responsive ionic conductors. Their most notable contribution is the development of "smart skins" that can simultaneously change shape and switch their ionic conductivity, a breakthrough achieved through the synthesis of novel azobenzene-based ionic reactive mesogens. This work, published in 2023 and already garnering 24 citations, demonstrates how uniaxially oriented LCEs can be engineered to respond to multiple external triggers, merging anisotropic mechanical deformation with tunable electrical properties. By creating materials that are both shape-changeable and conductivity-switchable, Kim’s research opens new pathways for soft robotics, wearable electronics, and adaptive interfaces. Their ability to integrate molecular design with macroscopic functionality marks them as a key contributor to the next generation of multifunctional smart skins.
