About

Stephen Pollard is a computer vision and robotics researcher whose career has centered on developing practical 3D vision systems for industrial and autonomous applications. He is best known as a principal contributor to TINA, the Sheffield Artificial Intelligence Vision Research Unit (AIVRU) vision system, which became a landmark achievement in applied computer vision during the late 1980s and early 1990s. TINA demonstrated sophisticated model-based object recognition and localization, and its successful guidance of a robotic arm in pick-and-place tasks proved the real-world viability of machine vision for robotics—work that has accumulated dozens of citations and remains foundational in the field. Pollard's research extended naturally into stereo vision, multiprocessor vision architectures, and autonomous guided vehicles, reflecting a sustained commitment to bridging theoretical vision science with engineering practice. More recently, he has contributed to the calibration and correction of 3D structured light scanners (2021) and kinematic calibration techniques for multi-degree-of-freedom robotic manipulators, demonstrating an enduring focus on measurement accuracy and precision robotics. Across more than three decades, his cumulative body of work has shaped how researchers and engineers approach 3D scene understanding, robotic guidance, and vision-based automation.
