About
Stephen Foale is a key figure in the development of robotic astronomical instrumentation, with his work centered on high-resolution spectroscopy and automated telescope networks. As a core contributor to the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT), Foale helped design and implement the Network of Robotic Echelle Spectrographs (NRES)—a system of four identical, high-resolution optical spectrographs fiber-fed by up to two 1-meter telescopes each. This groundbreaking work, detailed in his 2018 paper (51 citations), enables simultaneous, precise spectroscopic observations across multiple sites worldwide. Foale also advanced the robotic acquisition of spectrograph targets, developing strategies and algorithms to accurately position sources on spectrograph slits across LCOGT’s global network of 1.0m to 2.0m telescopes. His contributions are foundational to the automation of time-domain astrophysics, allowing for efficient, unattended observations of transient phenomena. Foale’s achievements have significantly enhanced the capabilities of robotic observatories, making high-resolution spectroscopy accessible for large-scale surveys and follow-up studies. His work continues to shape the future of autonomous astronomical research.
