About
Soo Chin Liew is a leading figure in aerosol remote sensing, whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of atmospheric aerosols over the Maritime Continent. Based at the National University of Singapore’s Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP), his research focuses on characterizing aerosol optical properties, vertical distributions, and their environmental impacts. Liew’s most impactful contribution came from his analysis of the extreme 2015 Indonesian biomass burning event, where he used AERONET data to document the severe aerosol optical properties from peatland fires—a study that has garnered 78 citations and is critical for understanding El Niño-driven air quality crises. He has also pioneered methods for retrieving aerosol optical depth and Ångström exponent from ground-based sun-photometers in Singapore, and developed techniques to screen cirrus cloud contamination in aerosol observations using collocated lidar systems. With a total of over 230 citations across his top papers, Liew’s work directly supports the Seven Southeast Asian Studies (7SEAS) program and provides essential data for linking satellite observations to ground-level particulate matter, making him a key resource for researchers studying regional haze, climate forcing, and public health impacts in Southeast Asia.
