About
Sharath K. Bhagavatula is a pioneering interventional radiologist whose research focuses on precision oncology, image-guided therapies, and the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic platforms for cancer. His most impactful work centers on the creation and clinical translation of an implantable microdevice (IMD) for prostate cancer. In a landmark proof-of-concept study, Dr. Bhagavatula demonstrated the safety and feasibility of MR-guided percutaneous implantation of a multidrug-eluting microdevice directly into prostate tumors in men with intermediate- and high-risk disease. This innovative approach allows for the simultaneous in situ testing of multiple systemic therapy agents within a single tumor microenvironment, providing a powerful tool to predict individual patient drug response before committing to systemic treatment. This work, published in 2024, has already garnered early citations for its potential to revolutionize personalized cancer therapy. By enabling real-time, intratumoral drug sensitivity testing, Dr. Bhagavatula’s contributions are paving the way for more rational, effective, and less toxic treatment regimens, marking a significant advance in the field of interventional oncology.
