Sebastian Kai van Es is a robotics researcher whose work advances the practical deployment of long-term autonomous navigation, particularly in visually challenging environments. His primary research areas include visual teach and repeat (VT&R) systems, visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and robust path following for mobile robots. Van Es’s most significant contribution is his extended field test of Visual Teach and Repeat 2.0, detailed in his highly cited 2017 paper, “I Can See for Miles and Miles” (22 citations). This work demonstrated that a robot could reliably navigate over 2.5 kilometers of rough, natural terrain by learning a visual route and then precisely retracing it, even under varying lighting and seasonal conditions.
