About
Sayali Kate is a leading researcher in the security and reliability of cyber-physical systems, with a particular focus on robotic vehicles and the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework. Her work has pioneered the identification of a novel class of vulnerabilities known as "Cyber-Physical Inconsistencies," which exploit mismatches between a robot's software safety checks and its physical environment—for example, tricking crash detection systems through maliciously placed obstacles. This foundational research has garnered over 22 citations and established a new dimension in robotic security. Kate has also made significant contributions to software reliability, developing techniques to infer and validate physical unit assignments in program variables (20 citations) and creating real-time recovery methods against sensor attacks (19 citations). Her latest work, ROSCallBaX, addresses the critical challenge of statically detecting inconsistencies in callback function setups across multi-version ROS systems. Through her research, Kate has fundamentally advanced how we understand and protect the safety-critical software that controls autonomous vehicles, bridging the gap between theoretical security models and practical, real-world robotic deployments.
