About

S. Calchi Novati is a leading figure in gravitational microlensing, a powerful technique for detecting exoplanets and stellar-mass objects that are otherwise invisible. His research centers on developing and implementing automated, real-time detection strategies to overcome the inherent rarity and unpredictability of microlensing events. His most impactful contribution is the design and execution of a fully-deterministic observing strategy, detailed in a highly-cited 2010 paper (88 citations), which provides a robust framework for statistically inferring the demographics of exoplanet populations across the galaxy. This work was instrumental in transforming microlensing from a discovery tool into a statistical census machine. Novati also pioneered the first automated, real-time detection of a weak microlensing anomaly with the ARTEMiS system, as demonstrated in his analysis of OGLE-2008-BLG-510 (25 citations). His subsequent work, including the detailed analysis of the binary event OGLE-2015-BLG-0060 (5 citations) using data from 13 telescopes, showcases his dedication to extracting the maximum astrophysical information from these rare alignments. Through his focus on automation and rigorous statistical inference, Novati has been a key architect of the modern, data-driven approach to microlensing surveys.
