About
M. Pondrom is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the remote sensing of mineral dust aerosols, a critical component of the Earth’s climate system. Her major contributions center on the development and validation of methods to retrieve dust aerosol properties from satellite-based infrared sounders, particularly the Infrared Atmospheric Sounder Interferometer (IASI). Her most cited work, “Infrared dust aerosol optical depth retrieved daily from IASI and comparison with AERONET over the period 2007–2016” (2017, 83 citations), established a robust, long-term daily dataset for dust optical depth, enabling unprecedented temporal analysis of dust transport and variability. Complementing this, her 2014 study (61 citations) rigorously evaluated IASI-derived dust characteristics—including optical depth and altitude—against ground-based AERONET and CALIOP observations over the tropical belt, demonstrating the reliability of infrared retrievals for monitoring dust plumes.
