About
Hongbin Yu is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the global lifecycle of aerosols—particularly mineral dust—and their interactions with climate. He is best known for his central role in developing and evaluating NASA’s MERRA-2 aerosol reanalysis, a landmark dataset that provides the first multi-decadal, observationally constrained record of global aerosol distributions. His work on the MERRA-2 evaluation paper has garnered over 900 citations, underscoring its foundational impact. Yu has also made major contributions to understanding dust transport across the Atlantic, using satellite data from MODIS, CALIOP, and ground-based AERONET networks to quantify dust sources, sinks, and optical properties. His 2021 global dust optical depth climatology, derived from CALIOP and MODIS, provides a critical benchmark for assessing decadal-scale variability. With a career spanning satellite data integration, model evaluation, and radiative forcing analysis, Yu’s research has advanced our ability to monitor and predict aerosol impacts on weather, climate, and air quality.
