About
L. Danisch is a pioneer in fiber optic sensing technology, best known for inventing SHAPE TAPE™—a spatially continuous six-degree-of-freedom position and orientation sensor. His foundational 1999 paper on this innovation (57 citations) describes a thin array of fiber optic curvature sensors laminated on a ribbon substrate, capable of detecting bend and twist to build real-time 3D computer models of any point along the sensor. This breakthrough enabled unprecedented shape-sensing for robotics, medical devices, and structural monitoring. Danisch also developed bend-enhanced fiber (BEF) sensors, curvature-measuring optical analogs of strain gauges, detailed in his 1994 teleoperation study (7 citations). His work on deformation measurement using MEMS arrays and ShapeAccelArray instruments (5 citations) achieved sub-millimetre accuracy validated by robotic total stations, advancing geotechnical monitoring. With over 80 total citations, Danisch’s contributions have shaped the fields of smart materials, structural health monitoring, and human-machine interfaces, offering researchers a powerful tool for capturing continuous, real-world spatial data.
