About
Krzysztof M. Markowicz is a leading atmospheric physicist whose research focuses on the complex role of aerosols in the climate system, particularly in the European Arctic and Central Europe. His major contributions center on characterizing aerosol optical properties—such as optical depth and single-scattering albedo—using an innovative blend of satellite remote sensing, ground-based measurements, and unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Notably, his work on absorbing aerosols reveals how their vertical distribution can shift a particle’s climate impact from cooling to warming, a critical nuance for climate modeling. With over 70 citations across his most influential papers, Markowicz’s impact is evident in studies like the multiyear NAAPS model analysis of aerosol optical thickness over Europe (24 citations) and the 2019 comparison of columnar and UAS profiles in Poland (22 citations). He also led the 2014 iAREA campaign in Spitsbergen, providing rare, detailed physical and chemical aerosol data from the High Arctic. Through long-term analyses—such as the 1964–2010 Tatra Mountain record—and near-real-time satellite algorithms, Markowicz advances our ability to monitor air quality and understand aerosol-radiation interactions, making his work essential for students and researchers tackling climate change and atmospheric chemistry.
