About
Jonathan Tirado is an emerging robotics researcher whose work spans two richly interconnected domains: bio-inspired soft robotics and human-robot interaction (HRI). Drawing on nature's most elegant locomotion strategies, Tirado has made notable contributions to the design of earthworm-inspired robotic systems. His highly cited 2024 paper on soft skin crawling robots (22 citations) explores how anisotropic friction — mimicking the setae of earthworms — can enable peristaltic locomotion across complex terrains. Complementing this, his work on multimodal soft actuators and kirigami-skinned limbless robots further advances the field of compliant, terrain-adaptive machines. Equally significant is Tirado's research in intuitive robot collaboration. Through the CobotAR and CobotGear platforms, he has pioneered gesture-based and wearable motion-capture interfaces that allow humans to interact safely and naturally with industrial robots — moving beyond traditional programming paradigms. His CoboGuider system introduces haptic potential fields to enforce safe separation in collaborative workspaces. Across his growing body of work, Tirado consistently bridges biomechanics, soft materials, and intelligent sensing. With publications accumulating over 70 citations and spanning top venues in robotics and human-machine systems, he represents a compelling voice in the next generation of robotics research.
