About
Jennifer Devolites is a leading aerospace engineer specializing in autonomous guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) systems for planetary landers. Her research focuses on developing precision landing and hazard avoidance technologies critical for future robotic and crewed missions to the Moon and other solid solar bodies. Devolites made significant contributions to the Autonomous precision Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT) project, integrating prototype sensors—including LIDAR systems—to enable safe, autonomous landings under challenging terrain lighting conditions. Her work on the ALHAT-Morpheus flight testing (14 citations) demonstrated these capabilities in real-world scenarios. She also led the GN&C subsystem concept for the proposed Lunar MARE (Moon Age and Regolith Explorer) Discovery Mission (5 citations), designing a system to deliver a science payload within a 100-meter radius of a scientifically rich target near Aristarchus crater. Devolites’ contributions are foundational to NASA’s vision for precise, safe landing on the Moon and beyond, directly supporting the next generation of exploration missions.
