J. Ara Chalian is a leading head and neck surgeon whose work has reshaped the treatment of oropharyngeal cancer through the advancement of minimally invasive techniques. His primary research focuses on transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and its role in reducing the morbidity of traditional cancer treatments. Dr. Chalian’s most influential contribution is his landmark 2012 prospective study demonstrating that TORS alone—without adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy—can achieve excellent local control for select patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
