About
Virginia A. LiVolsi is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose research has fundamentally reshaped the treatment of oropharyngeal cancer, particularly through the application of transoral robotic surgery (TORS). Her work focuses on de-intensifying therapy for HPV-related cancers to reduce long-term morbidity without compromising oncologic outcomes. Her landmark 2012 study, cited over 228 times, demonstrated that TORS alone could achieve excellent local control for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, challenging the standard of combined chemoradiation. She further advanced the field with the Phase 2 AVOID trial (167 citations), showing that the resected primary tumor bed could be safely omitted from postoperative radiation, sparing patients unnecessary toxicity. LiVolsi also pioneered TORS-assisted endoscopy for detecting occult mucosal primaries in patients presenting with cervical metastases, a diagnostic challenge that previously led to extensive, morbid treatment.
