H. Jason Newman is a leading head and neck surgeon whose work has fundamentally reshaped the treatment of oropharyngeal cancer. His primary research focuses on minimally invasive surgical techniques, particularly transoral robotic surgery (TORS), and de-escalation strategies that preserve function without compromising oncologic outcomes. Newman’s landmark 2012 prospective study, “Transoral Robotic Surgery Alone for Oropharyngeal Cancer,” demonstrated that TORS using the da Vinci system could achieve excellent local control as a single-modality treatment, sparing patients the toxicities of adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy. With 228 citations, this work established a paradigm shift in organ-preserving head and neck oncology. Beyond this, Newman has been instrumental in refining surgical robotics, advancing multidisciplinary care models, and mentoring a generation of surgeons.
