About
Hisao Nishijo is a leading neuroscientist whose research bridges cognitive neuroscience, social interaction, and neurorehabilitation. His work primarily focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying decision-making, social cognition, and human-robot interaction, with a particular emphasis on the prefrontal and cingulate cortices. In his highly cited 2012 study, Nishijo demonstrated how neuronal activity in the anterior cingulate cortex encodes observation-based decision-making in monkeys, providing foundational insights into how the brain processes social cues and outcomes. More recently, his 2022 fNIRS study revealed that the rostromedial prefrontal cortex is critically involved during human-robot interaction, especially when individuals use assistive exoskeleton robots for motor tasks. This work has important implications for neurorehabilitation, showing that the central nervous system engages in heightened external information processing to efficiently coordinate with robotic assistance. With over 11 citations on his landmark study alone, Nishijo’s contributions are shaping our understanding of how the brain adapts to both social and technological environments. His research is particularly valuable for students and researchers interested in cognitive neuroscience, social robotics, and the neural basis of human-machine collaboration.
