About
H. Cuevas is a leading figure in space situational awareness and time-domain astrophysics, with a career defined by building the observational infrastructure to monitor both human-made and natural transient phenomena. As a key architect of the Falcon Telescope Network (FTN), Cuevas established a pioneering global array of small-aperture optical telescopes, developed at the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Center for Space Situational Awareness Research. This network, detailed in a foundational 2018 paper (18 citations), is designed for the critical task of tracking artificial satellites and studying near-Earth space, directly addressing the growing challenge of orbital debris and space traffic management. Cuevas’s impact extends to gravitational wave astronomy through leadership in the Transient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South (TOROS) collaboration. During the Advanced LIGO–Virgo O2 campaign, Cuevas orchestrated the rapid optical follow-up of gravitational wave events (2019, 5 citations), demonstrating the ability to pinpoint and characterize the electromagnetic counterparts of these cosmic collisions. By bridging the gap between defense-related space surveillance and cutting-edge astrophysical discovery, Cuevas has created a unique legacy—building the telescopes and networks that keep watch over our planet while simultaneously scanning the universe for its most violent and fleeting signals.
