About

Di Qi is a materials scientist whose work bridges organic crystal engineering and adaptive soft matter. Her research centers on the mechanics of crystalline materials, particularly how external stimuli can program unconventional shapes and motions into organic crystals. Qi's most notable contribution is the discovery of a method to create logarithmic and Archimedean organic crystalline spirals—a feat previously thought impossible for crystals, which typically grow in straight or faceted forms. By applying a non-uniform polymer blend layer onto slender, centimeter-scale organic crystals, she demonstrated that these hybrid structures can be prestrained into dynamic, reversible spirals that respond to environmental changes. This work, published in 2024 and already garnering 13 citations, opens new avenues for soft robotics, sensors, and adaptive optical devices. Qi's innovative approach challenges fundamental assumptions about crystal growth and deformation, positioning her as a rising leader in the field of stimuli-responsive crystalline materials. Her research not only advances fundamental materials science but also inspires practical applications in shape-morphing technologies.
