About
Chi Tu is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of robotics, petroleum engineering, and intelligent automation. His primary research areas include downhole robotics for oil and gas drilling, mechatronic control systems, and vision-based structural inspection. Dr. Tu’s most significant contribution is the development of a combined control mechanism for weight on bit (WOB) and rate of penetration (ROP) using a downhole robot in coiled-tubing drilling—a breakthrough that addresses a critical gap in horizontal well operations. This work, published in 2021, has garnered 16 citations and lays the foundation for autonomous drilling. He has also advanced high-temperature, high-pressure (HTHP) sealing performance analysis for downhole robots, employing novel coupled simulation methods rather than traditional separate loading approaches. In civil engineering, Dr. Tu introduced a vision-based deep learning and computational geometry system for automatic rebar spacing inspection, achieving 12 citations. Earlier in his career, he developed a graphical user interface for a humanoid robot to enhance social interaction with children. His interdisciplinary work—spanning downhole automation, structural inspection, and human-robot interaction—demonstrates a unique ability to apply robotic solutions across extreme environments and critical infrastructure.
