About
Berit Brusletto is a molecular biologist whose work has transformed the diagnosis and understanding of life-threatening bacterial infections. Her primary research focuses on the rapid detection and quantification of *Neisseria meningitidis*, the pathogen responsible for meningococcal disease—a devastating condition that can cause meningitis and sepsis. Brusletto’s most influential contribution is her pioneering use of robotized DNA isolation combined with real-time quantitative PCR, targeting the *Neisseria meningitidis*-specific capsular transport A gene. In her landmark 2004 study, she demonstrated that this method could rapidly, sensitively, and specifically quantify neisserial DNA in both plasma and cerebrospinal fluid. Critically, she uncovered a close correlation between bacterial DNA levels and lipopolysaccharide concentrations, providing a powerful new tool for assessing disease severity. This work, which has garnered 108 citations, established a gold-standard approach for molecular diagnosis of meningococcal disease, enabling faster clinical decision-making. Brusletto’s research bridges cutting-edge automation with clinical microbiology, significantly advancing our ability to detect and monitor this deadly pathogen.
