About

Aibek Niyetkaliyev is a robotics researcher whose work focuses on the design and control of rehabilitation exoskeletons, with a particular emphasis on restoring upper-limb function for stroke survivors. His major contributions lie in advancing robotic shoulder rehabilitation orthoses, where he has tackled the critical challenge of joint-axis misalignment between exoskeletons and the human shoulder. His highly cited 2017 review (85 citations) established a foundational understanding of design and control aspects in this domain. Niyetkaliyev has pioneered novel bio-inspired and cable-driven hybrid mechanisms that accommodate all shoulder degrees-of-freedom, as demonstrated in his 2020 kinematic modeling study. More recently, he has developed a virtual biomechanical shoulder robot model based on a 6-4 parallel mechanism, integrating biomechanical constraints into the design optimization process. His work extends to home-based rehabilitation through the intelligence edge framework, and he has also contributed to gait rehabilitation with biomimetic knee joints. By addressing both transparency and patient comfort, Niyetkaliyev’s research is helping to bridge the gap between laboratory prototypes and practical, accessible robotic therapy for everyday clinical and home use.
