About

Dr. A. Masters is a leading figure in planetary science, whose work has been instrumental in defining the next frontier of solar system exploration. His primary research focuses on the ice giants, Uranus and Neptune, and the complex magnetospheric and plasma environments that surround them. Dr. Masters’ major contribution lies in his advocacy and scientific groundwork for the first dedicated robotic missions to these distant worlds. His highly influential papers, including the seminal "Ice giant system exploration in the 2020s: an introduction" (21 citations) and "Ice giant system exploration within ESA’s Voyage 2050" (11 citations), have united the international planetary science community. These works articulate the urgent scientific case for exploring these "intermediate-sized" planets and their unique satellite and ring systems, which remain the last major class of planet in our solar system yet to be comprehensively characterized. Through his leadership, Dr. Masters has helped shape the strategic vision for ESA’s Voyage 2050 program, ensuring that the exploration of these enigmatic worlds remains a top priority for the coming decades.
