Abstract
<div class="htmlview paragraph">A summary of the state-of-the-art of current research efforts in robotics is presented. Various aspects of robotics research are discussed including kinematics, geometry, controls, locomotion, sensing, and artificial intelligence. It is found that in each of these areas there exist important research needs and research opportunities. It is shown that much remains to be done before industry, and society in general, will begin to enjoy the full benefit of this important technology.</div>
