Abstract

With the development of countries and rapidly increasing populations, automation is becoming a basic requirement everywhere, including the automation of machines used either in the home or at the workplace, automation of the healthcare industry, automation of manpower using robots and automation in transportation. This requirement of automation invented the term IoT, the “Internet of Things”. IoT is a network of objects that can communicate with each other globally. Due to the exponential growth of populations, a drastic increase in the number of vehicles on the road necessitated the requirement of better communication among vehicles, better safety and intelligent transportation services, and that is how the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) came into being. IoV is the vehicular version of IoT and a bigger version of VANET in terms of infrastructure and interconnectivity between different entities. Further, VANET is the application of MANET used in the automobile industry. There are many challenges and issues in vehicle automation and communication faced with the basic VANET technology that are raising other concerns like security, safety, congestion control and application services. So, IoV is gaining the researcher’s interest and has now become a new emerging research area. This chapter focuses on emerging applications and services required for the Smart cities and the scope of the Internet of Vehicles.
