Abstract

In this paper a mobile robot which utilises a dual-energy source system has been mathemati- cally modelled using a combination of type-II and type-III fuzzy representations. In several demand- ing applications, mobile robots are required to op- erate over long periods of time without the need of the long charging times. The strategic on-board combination of both an internal combustion en- gine (ICE) and an electric drive system thus of- fer a desirable solution. There are several energy sources such as secondary batteries, flywheels and super-capacitors which could potentially provide the energy required to the electric motors. How- ever, in this paper the conventional sealed (self- regulated) Lead-Acid Battery has been considered as the electric energy source. The battery state- of-charge (SoC) is modelled using two operational strategies. Both maintained the SoC to a required level by means of automatically starting the engine depending on the current level demand from the traction motors and the allowable minimum SoC. The paper concludes with the benefits of the SoC simulation approach and a plethora of results.
