Abstract

Claw pole rotor synchronous alternators with diode rectified output controlled through circular-shaped dc excitation coil current on rotor claw pole machine (CPM) has been used exclusively on road vehicles as electric power source, with ever-growing ratings, since 1975. The present review paper reports on the recent progress of claw pole synchronous motor (CPSM)/generator (CP-SM/G) in terms of topologies, modeling methods for steady state and transients, optimal design, control advances, testing, with applications extended to robotics, home appliances, electric propulsion, and wind (hydro) energy conversion, to obtain higher torque density and lower copper loss/ <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\text{N}\cdot \text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> , at reasonable drive system initial and ownership costs.
