Abstract

As the challenges of maritime safety and security evolve we are forced to closely examine emerging threats and to develop a maritime strategy that embodies solutions for current and a widening array of future threats. Robotic platforms have proven to be an effective tool for gathering information in support of land based security and disaster response and are now being explored in an effort to support maritime security, search and rescue and disaster response. This paper discusses existing and potential use of micro-unmanned surface vessels (USVs) in support of a range of maritime security issues and identifies a comprehensive, low-cost tool to combat future terrorists, while addressing maritime security and safety considerations.
