A radio repeater is a device that receives a wireless signal and retransmits it at higher power or from a better-positioned location, effectively extending the communication range beyond what a single transmitter could achieve. In robotics and AI applications, radio repeaters are deployed to maintain reliable data links between robots and their operators or base stations, particularly in challenging environments where signals are blocked or attenuated by walls, rubble, or terrain. For example, in Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) scenarios, WiFi repeaters are strategically placed to extend communication into confined spaces where direct radio contact would otherwise fail. Mobile repeaters can also be carried by robots themselves, forming dynamic relay chains that adapt as robots move deeper into a coverage gap. This capability is critical because continuous, low-latency communication underpins teleoperation, sensor data transmission, and coordinated multi-robot behavior. Without reliable connectivity, autonomous systems lose situational awareness and operator oversight, making radio repeaters an essential enabler of robust real-world robotic deployments.
