About

Zulmari Silva-Pedraza is a rising leader in the development of soft, bio-inspired materials for next-generation implantable devices. Her research focuses on the intersection of biomaterials, hygroscopic actuation, and degradable electronics, with a particular emphasis on creating systems that can safely and dynamically interact with biological tissues. In her highly cited 2025 work, "A Hydro-Expansive and Degradable Biomaterial Enabling Shape Recovery of Film-Based Devices in Biofluids," Silva-Pedraza introduced a novel material that swells in response to moisture, enabling film-based devices to recover their shape within the body. This breakthrough addresses a critical challenge in soft robotics and catheter implantation: achieving reliable, self-deploying structures that are both functional and fully resorbable.
