About
Zhenping Yin is a leading atmospheric scientist whose research focuses on the critical role of mineral dust in aerosol–cloud interactions (ACIs)—the largest source of uncertainty in global climate models. His major contributions center on developing and refining the POLIPHON (POlarization LIdar PHOtometer Networking) methodology, which enables the retrieval of three-dimensional profiles of dust-related cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice-nucleating particle (INP) concentrations from lidar observations. Yin’s foundational 2023 paper, which established the POLIPHON conversion factors for oceanic sites, has already garnered 14 citations, underscoring its importance in advancing the characterization of dust’s climatic impact. He extended this work in a 2025 study, expanding the conversion factor dataset to further improve the accuracy of dust-related CCN and INP profiles. By providing essential tools for integrating dust effects into global circulation models, Yin’s research directly addresses a key gap in climate science. His work is particularly notable for its practical application in remote sensing, offering a pathway to better understand how mineral dust influences cloud formation and the Earth’s radiation budget.
