About

Zhen-Jun Sun is a pioneer in the development of next-generation capsule robots for gastrointestinal (GI) diagnostics. His research focuses on magnetically actuated and mechanically innovative robotic systems designed to navigate the challenging environment of the small intestine. Sun’s most influential work, the "Preliminary Study of a Legged Capsule Robot Actuated Wirelessly by Magnetic Torque" (2014, 41 citations), introduced a groundbreaking design: a capsule with four legs that moves without an internal power supply, driven solely by external magnetic torque. This concept eliminates the need for batteries, enabling safer and more compact devices. Building on this, Sun developed a novel capsule robot with spring-connected legs (2022), which uses a micromotor and interconnected springs to open and fold its six legs, allowing for precise tissue interaction and potential biopsy collection. His work on a magnetically maneuverable capsule endoscope with direction reference (2014) further advanced image navigation, providing real-time orientation feedback.
