About
Yukio Honda is a multidisciplinary robotics and electrical engineering researcher whose work spans autonomous mobile systems, motor design, and assistive technologies. He is perhaps best recognized for his influential 2012 study on visible light communication systems for autonomous hospital delivery robots (87 citations), which addressed critical safety gaps in existing mobile robot control frameworks and advanced the practical deployment of robots in complex healthcare environments. Complementing this, his work on 3D dynamic environment recognition for mobile robots further demonstrated his commitment to robust, real-world autonomous navigation. Honda's earlier contributions to electrical engineering are equally noteworthy, particularly his research on multilayer interior permanent-magnet synchronous motors. His 1998 paper on rotor design optimization (68 citations) remains a key reference for maximizing reluctance and magnetic torque performance in IPM motors, bridging simulation and experimental validation. He also explored quadruped robot locomotion, developing methods for omni-directional walking on slopes with optimized body postures.
