About
Yuki Nakagawa’s research career is defined by a pioneering commitment to advancing mobile robotics in unstructured, real-world environments. His most impactful contribution is the landmark paper "Test arenas and performance metrics for urban search and rescue robots" (2004, 152 citations), which established standardized, tangible test arenas that provide realistic and challenging environments for evaluating robots in disaster scenarios. This work enabled direct, objective comparison across different robotic systems, becoming a foundational resource for the urban search and rescue robotics community and significantly shaping how researchers benchmark performance in unstructured settings. Nakagawa also explored intelligent perception systems, including a real-time fuzzy dynamic image understanding system for autonomous land vehicles on general roads (1994), and investigated multimodal integration by combining auditory and visual perception for RoboCup humanoid soccer players (2003).
