About

Youngjae Choe is a pioneer at the intersection of microfluidics, organ-on-a-chip technology, and laboratory automation. His research centers on developing robotic platforms that can fluidically link multiple human organ chips to create "body-on-chips" systems—miniaturized, interconnected models of human physiology that recapitulate complex organ-organ interactions. Choe’s most impactful contribution is his 2020 work on robotic fluidic coupling and interrogation of multiple vascularized organ chips, which has garnered over 400 citations and demonstrated how automated liquid handling can sustain and monitor several tissue models simultaneously. He also engineered a biomimetic smoking robot for in vitro inhalation exposure, enabling realistic studies of aerosol effects on lung chips. His landmark 2019 paper introduced the "Interrogator" instrument—a robotic platform that integrates perfusion, medium exchange, fluidic linking, sample collection, and in situ microscopy for up to ten Organ Chips. This work has been instrumental in advancing high-throughput, automated human-relevant drug testing and disease modeling.
