Yael Arbel is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of assistive robotics and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), with a primary focus on restoring independence to individuals with severe motor impairments. Her most impactful work centers on the development and control of a 9-degree-of-freedom wheelchair-mounted robotic arm (WMRA) system, which she designed to assist mobility-impaired persons who also have limited upper extremity function. In her landmark 2009 paper, which has garnered 95 citations, Arbel demonstrated the first successful control of this complex robotic system using a P300-based BCI, a non-invasive EEG method that detects the brain's response to rare, task-relevant stimuli.
